I, Ian Ray now 56 years old two adult children, was saddened to hear the passing of Dr Cohen. I was the recipient of his surgical skills when I was 18 months old and again when three years old, with a kidney condition. I owe my life to his compassion and dedication to his proffession as a caring surgeon. Ionly learnt of and read about Dr Cohen's passing this week and pass on my condolances to Richard , Susan and their families.

This great man fixed me up in 1961!!! Now almost 55 & 3 girls of my own, all thanks to you. My parents at the time, did not have alot of money & Dr Cohen operated on me & let my mum & dad pay off the bill over time. His words were, I dont want you to sell your car to pay this bill. My mum & dad are still alive & well in their 80 s. I am sure there are alot of lucky people out there who were touched by this man. I have the article from the paper laminated in my little shop where I work as as jeweller & I tell my customers about him. The Doctor & I have a something in common, we love sailing, me now for 40 years. It is very possible that the student nurse Frances Hinson assisted and viewed my operation. To Dr Cohen's family and friends .......you should be very proud of such a great and talented man. John Atkins

To Richard & Family. Please accept my sincere condolences and those of my family particularly my mother Barbara Dowling [formerly of Musswellbrook NSW]. I read your tribute to Dr Douglas in Friday's [19 Jan] Sydney Morning Herald. Your dad saved my life as in the early 1960's I was admitted to the Childrens Hospital with a tumour in my adrenalin gland. Dr Douglas used at the time revolutionary surgery proceedures to keep me alive. It was the first successful operation of its type in Australia. Over the years I tried to contact Dr Cohen to express my thanks personally, even going to the Hospital and leaving a note. I sent a letter care of the hospital as well. I hope that one day I will be able to meet you and your family to express my thanks personaly for a man with great compassion.

As a young student nurse at RAHC (1958-1962), I was priviledged to be present during exciting and ground breaking open heart surgery conducted by Dr Douglas Cohen. He left a lasting impression on me as a man of great humanity and compassion and he was a wonderful teacher. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.
