In 1961; Neil and I and our 5 month old daughter, Susan, left Hackensack, New Jersey. Leaving family and friends behind; little did we know that we were embarking on the most wonderful adventure of our lives. Neil and our small family were to spend a few years in Australia with Ford Motor Company, Australia. The greatest gift of all was our close association with the Clarke's....Hugh was Neil's boss at that time and we were warmly included in all of the Clarke's family activities......Our second daughter, Carol, was born in Adelaide, S.A.; Elaine and Hugh signed on to be her "Godparents" and Carol was christened in St. Augustine's church in Sydney; Over the years we have kept in touch.....we left Australia in 1963; President Kennedy was assasinated just as we were awaiting our flight in a motel in Adelaide....I cannot describe to you our love for the Clarkes and their family....they WERE our Australian family......Elaine and Hugh made it so easy for us.....Elaine was one of the strongest people I have ever known; gentle.....but with a backbone of steel....having survived Peripheral Polio in her younger years......I don't think I ever heard her compain about anything....she was a loyal loving support to her family and to me.....a young mother at the time ; she was always there.....we had much joy doing so many things with the Clarke family....their children, Heather and Peter are equally wonderful people.......I just can't believe Elaine is gone.....but then, she had always done things quietly with little fanfare......I just know that the loss of being able to speak to her (which we did frequently....by phone).....and know that I could call her. We shall always miss her and love for her and Hugh will not diminish or be lost.
