Estelles character was what a caring mother is all about. Her loving wisecracking demeanor was always so funny to watch.she was a very talented person. You will be missed Estelle you are probably in heaven making people laugh this very moment. my condolences to the family..
I still watch The Golden Girls almost every night. My memories of Sofia was that she was the smartest one of the girls. She had a sense of humor, warm advice to the other ladies and always had words of wisdom with a little wisecrack mixed in. It's a shame that such a horrible disease took such a brilliant mind. She will be remembered always.
You made my lunch break the best. Thanks much.
Ever since I could remember Estelle Getty who played on the tv show, " The Golden Girls,"I loved her mother/daughter act & the way she looked after the girls on the show was awsome. She really had a big heart & she will be missed, but never forgotten. May God keep her in his loving arms.
I watch every show that is on and i lauugh every time . It was easy to tell she had to be a very "Special Lady" It will always be my favorite show on television. I amso sorr for the families loss.
The Golden Girls was and still is by far one of the best comedy shows of all time. Sophia, Dorothy, Rose and Blanche knew how to make us laugh and yes even cry, they were so down to earth and made me believe they were REAL even if only for 30 minutes. Estelle played a fiesty woman who knew who she was and never let anyone tell her any different. I know i'm not alone when I say "I hope I"m like Like Sophia when I'm her age!!!"
GOD Bless her family in this time of sorrow
Fly free of the fetters your early body tied you with. Enjoy the loosened bonds of your mind, your soul now wandering the heavens and creation, rejoined with all that love you and that you love. Fly free gentle soul that brought happiness to so many! You will live on here in our thoughts and prayers.
I loved the mother /daughter relationship, especially when the "little lady" called the much taller daughter "pussycat". The chemistry on that show was amazing, but that's what makes a show a Hit. I just finished reading Betty White's book "Here We Go Again". So much of GG is mentioned and now so fresh in my mind. I watched the show from the beginning until the very end. Mu mom will be 93 this coming August 22. She lives many miles away but we speak often on the phone. She's exceptionally sharp, just finished dictating her memoirs, recently took acting lessons and was one of the stars in Sobel's play "The Ghetto". She got raves from the director and the cast. and recently has had an article published in a magazine. Estelle had the vitality in the show that my mom had and watching her always made me feel a little closer to mom.
estill getty was pretty and i think she was a great actress and i hope she has a great life at heaven
A funny lady
We will you .Jennifer S
the show gave meaning of what comedy was and she did it all there will be no other person to take her place we will miss you
we will miss you
WHAT A SPIRITED ROLE MODEL FOR WOMEN TODAY. THANKS ESTELLE FOR YOUR PORTRAYAL OF AN OLDER WOMAN WHO KNEW WHAT TO SAY AND NEVER HESITATED TO SAY IT! TRUTH TELLER AND SAGE AND LOTS OF FUN BESIDES. WE'LL ALWAYS BE GRATEFUL FOR YOUR GIFTS. LAURA
I was so very deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Estelle Getty. I have identified her character, Sophia, with my own grandmother ever since the Golden Girls came on the air. My mother and I would watch it together and laugh, thinking we could hear Grandma saying the same things.
It's amazing what Estelle did to land the part of Sophia. She failed twice and came back strong for a third try, wowing the producers. The acerbic wit with which she delivered her lines was just pure comedic timing and genius. Just as Golden Girls was one of the BEST ensemble casts ever on television, Estelle was one of the BEST comedic actresses to have ever graced the screen.
Both Mom and Grandma have since passed away, and when Estelle passed, it felt a little like I was going through the losses again, especially since Grandma had dementia.
The show has provided me with so many laughs and I will continue to watch it, though my heart may be a little heavier. To Estelle's friends and family, I'm so sorry for your loss. Know that her fans are also feeling the pain. But take pride in what a fantastic woman you were able to have in your lives and know that we, as her fans, are grateful to have had her in ours.
Thank you for being a friend, Estelle.

My favorite was on the very first episode of "The Golden Girls" that shady pines burned down that she came to live with Bea Arthur, Betty White, and Rue McClanahan. Sophia was the funniest golden girl. Sophia said some funny quote on the pilot episode of GG which was "Like clockwork, 7AM I pee. Unfortunately, I don't get up until 8". The thing I enjoyed about Estelle Getty was I liked the 1992 movie Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot. Sophia had some good performances on "The Golden Girls'' When her Dorothy did mother and daughter pageant.
I will always LOVE the Golden Girls!
Estelle, you rest now in God's arms. Sophia will live with us always...
You made the Golden Girls the best show on TV with your New York sense of humor. Being from New York, you reminded me alot of my own family. Rest in peace Estelle. Your memory will live on forever. In our hearts and in reruns.
WATCHED THE GOLDEN GIRLS ON TV. NOW WATCHING ON DVD. YOU MADE ME LAUGH. I WAS SADDEN TO HERE THAT ESTELLE PASSED AWAY. MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO THE FAMILY OF ESTELLE GETTY.
I was so heart broken to find out the saddest news ever yesterday. I am 37 years old, and I watched every episode . I just cant believe you are gone. I loved you and the girls on the show. You are in my heart forever... SOPHIA will live on in our hearts forever!!! Love, Anne E. from san Jose, California
WE WILL MISS YOU , YOU WAS LIKE THE MEMBER OF THE FAMLY MEMBER THAT THAT WOULD KICK UP YOUR HEELS AND SAY THE HECK WITH THE REST OF YOU.
Estelle was she
and he was you.
Both 19 and green as grass
a war was on, alas, alas,
For three long years we wrote and wrote;
a silly pun, a lonely note.
But 22 is not 19
and much had happened in between
Our paths now split, we went our ways
yet still our recalled loving days
Then in a restaurant, this is true
“My God! Estelle! It’s really you!”
Yes it was, as large as life
but now a mother and a wife.
Our friendship thus began again,
it stretched from here to way back then.
And so to heaven’s gate I hurl
my love for my own golden girl.

We send our condolences to the family. Estelle was our favorite character on The Golden Girls. What a shame to lose such a talented person. She will always be in our hearts. WE LOVE YOU ESTELLE!!!!!
I extend my condolences to the family, friends and lovedones of my entertaining angel, Estelle Getty. Such a big heart in such a tiny body.....for years to come, I will ALWAYS hold her dear and am truly grateful for her gift to the world. I pray that her colleagues, Bea, Betty and Rue will be comforted and strengthened, and I hope that they know that
all is well now.......Estelle....we love you.
I am so saddened by the passing of Estelle. She played her part so perfectly. Coming from a family of Italians, it wasn't difficult to imagine her fitting right in with the older aunts and letting everyone know just how things were, are and will continue to be. She was a spark in our day everytime we watched Golden Girls.
Condolences to her family and thanks for sharing this wonderful woman with the world!
To the Family of the late Estelle Getty,
I am so sorry for your loss. I never knew her, like most of her fans, but what I saw each time I watched her in Golden Girls made me know that she was a very talented, full spirited and funny woman. I watched all of the episodes since the show's inception in the 1980's and up to the daily re-runs. I also have the full dvd sets. Estelle made me smile during those times when I felt really, really down. She was like the grandmother that I never knew. Her death is such a great loss not only to you, her family, but to us, her fans.
May you be granted the strength and courage to face the tough times to come. I know for a fact that she is in a very good place now.
God bless you Estelle, God bless you "Sophia:"

They say that a good actor can make you believe anything. I've always felt that a little bit of the person shows up in all of their performances. I only became truly aware of Estelle Getty as Sophia. I was completely blown away when I saw a picture of her without the wig! It's amazing to me how many places I've seen her and didn't make the connection. In one of my favorite moves, "Mask", and then, "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot," and "Mannequin." And when I looked it up at www.indb.com, I was amazed at how much she did and, even more amazed, at how many different places she showed up as "Sophia"! I still watch the reruns of the "Golden Girls" to this day. And it feels like my grandmother has died. It's a bit ironic that she died at 84, which is right around the age of Sophia, when the "Golden Girls" were still on. I'm going to be 41, and have just started to lose the celebrities I grew up with and it really makes me ache. Estelle, your warm heart and wonderful spirit came through in everything you did and I know you will be missed. May God bless and keep you. You were a true shooting star.
JUST WANTED TO SAY ... I FELT REALLY SAD WHEN I HEARD... I LOVE THE GOLDEN GIRLS ALSO...
PICTURE IT SICILY 19-- !!
I grew up watching the Golden Girls, In fact I have all their DVD's. Sophia was like my Mom and I was Dortothy!! That show made me laugh, cry and just feel happy that I have friends just like the "Golden Girls". Estelle, you will truly be missed in my heart!! Thanks for the re runs and all the laughs!!! Ihope you have arrived at your place of rest!!
Love and Miss
I grew up watching TheGoldenGirls with my mom. That was "our show" and we watched every episode. That was a time for us to bond together. We were best friends. My mom died March 24,2003 from cancer and brain tumors and menengitis. Sophia was our favorite character and if my mom was here she would greatly miss Estelle Getty. Rest in Peace Estelle, from my mother and I to you. You were a funny, amazing, great actress and you will be greatly missed. :) God Bless.
Love,
*Kayla and Samantha*
I will miss Estelle Getty. I grew up watching the Golden Girls and am known to quote Sophia. She was so wise...so funny,,,so sarcastic...so great...so missed. In this time of mourning, it is truly a blessing to think she has had the "ultimate healing." She is no longer sick.
I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER SOPHIA SHE WAS NOT ONLY ONE OF THE GOLDEN GIRLS BUT THE GOLDEN GIRL THAT MADE EVERYONE LAUGH I WILL MISS HER GREATLY GOD HAS CALLED AN ANGEL HOME REST IN PEACE
i have been watching Golden Girls for years and years and just loved estelle. she was a natural and was sooo funny. she made the show what it was. sorry for her families loss. what a great little lady.
I just leaned of Estelle's passing today and don't think I've stopped crying. Although I didn't know her personally, she was a visitor in my living room twice a day for the past ten years of re-runs and of course, every week during the original series.
As a teenager in the 80's...there was never a week I missed Golden Girls. My mother and I watched the show, later the girls in my college dorm would watch and then I had my daughter (3rd generation Golden Girls' Fan). She has vowed to turn her daughter onto the wonders of the show.
To Estelle's family...my family and I send out our hugs and prayers. She touched many lives in a positive way...I just wished more people were like her. The world has lost a true treasure and REAL FRIEND.
Hugs,
Sonya Kate Childers & Family

To Estelle Getty's family and friends, my heart goes out to you as you have lost one of the greatest treasures on this earth. No I don't know her but I have watch every episode of the Golden girls and seen movies she has starred in. What a great lady she seemed to be.
I can honestly remember watching that show (the Golden girls) and me and my friend use to laugh until we practically pee'd our pants because of Estelles wise cracks and just being so funny and always talking about Sicily she was just the best. I wish I could've been Estelle's **Pussycat**....We will all miss you. I am sorry that you had to leave the way you did. But your in a better place and your an angel among us now.
You lead a wonderful life. God bless you and your family :)
I will always remember you and I intend on watching the 5 hours of Golden Girls on Lifetime in your honor on July 25th 2008. All my Love....And I wish the family well through this trying time.

She will be missed by us all.
Her portrayal of Sofia was so wonderfully brilliant.so funny,so smart, and also very kind, compassionate, funny, sarcastic but always in a loving way.
Estelle was a jewel and a treasure.
I could always laugh for awhile when "The Golden Girls" was on,even with the stresses
in life, the actresses on "the Golden Girls" brought joy and laughter to my life.
There were also serious subjects on the show which were presented in very compassionate and caring and heartwarming ways.
It may me cry but there were other epidodes that made me laugh very hard.
Thankyou for being a friend.
God Bless You Dear Estelle.
I will miss you and I will never forget you.

She was one of the funniest woman on Tv in the 80's. What a spitfire she played. Her lines would have me laughing so hard that my ribs hurt. She is a true comic of her time and will be missed a great deal. Her memory will always be kept alive by her fans.
I send my heartfelt wishes to her family and friends at this difficult time.
It's our loss, and God's gain.
Thank you for making me laugh every day, I've seen every show of the golden girls and still to this day I laugh until my sides hurt. I know the heavens are a happier place since your there.

You were loved by many fans. I have diligently watched the Golden Girls since I was 4 years old (now almost 24), and to this day, when I see a rerun, you still make me laugh so hard! Your sense of humor and compassion for the people around you was amazing. You will be missed, and will always be loved, and best known as Sophia Petrillo. You will always be in our thoughts and hearts- forever.
