I was privileged to be Michael's English Literature teacher in his matriculation year at De La Salle Malvern. My enduring memory - so typical of Michael's open honesty - is analysing his essay on GREAT EXPECTATIONS and remarking that he gave the impression of not having read the book. Michael, in his disarming way, smiled and said,"Brother, there are too many words in it." I can understand why his students liked him

Mike we are all saddened by your passing, you were one of the nicest blokes we have ever met. The students loved you and we miss your cheery face around on Tuesday nights. We are privileged to have known and taught with you for a couple of years. I am so glad we were able to farewell you on your last night.
